Lyrebird Festival returns to Megalong Valley with music, art, food and more

The Lyrebird Festival is returning to the spectacular Megalong Valley, celebrating the region with music, art, food and wine, talks and nature walks. or signup to continue reading Founded and directed by the and supported by , the 2024 festival from November 14-17 has assembled some of Australia's finest musicians for a series of spellbinding concerts, to be held in the Old Stables on Megalong Road. The Lyrebird Festival brings together art, science and conservation, and includes local culinary delights, intimate, world-class performances and an installation by internationally renowned artist Janet Laurence.

Artists include classical accordion player James Crabb, violinist, singer and composer Eric Avery, renowned soprano Anna Fraser, and The Bowerbird Collective, violinist Simone Slattery and cellist Anthony Albrecht. Local singing group Vocal Edge will give a free performance at Megalong Tea Rooms, and Janet Laurence will again curate a special exhibit for the festival, in its most quirky venue, the Old Dairy located in a paddock near the tearooms. A special event for children and families is included this year, with Jodie McLeod leading book readings, craft activities and music about her beloved characters, Speakers include Tim Low, AM, author of , and Peter Cosier AM.



Both will be interviewed by Gregg Borschmann of the ABC's Radio National. Peter Hatherley will speak and lead a walk on the extraordinary geology of the Blue Mountains, and Tim Low will conduct a nature walk. Festival-goers can also take part in a morning yoga session, to the ethereal sounds of shakuhachi flute, played by Bronwyn Kirkpatrick.

These events are either free or very reasonably priced. All events have been scheduled to allow for plenty of time moving between each location. All concerts and other events can be booked separately, or together with a festival pass.

Pricing includes a 'Pay what you can' option. All concert events will include a beverage on arrival and delicious nibbles as part of the entry fee. The 2023 events were popular, so early booking is encouraged.

Transport for festival guests can be arranged from Blackheath Train Station. Register your transport needs on the festival website. An iconic Australian species, and an evolutionary marvel, the lyrebird represents all that is sacred in the bush.

They can be heard in the Megalong Valley imitating the calls of hundreds of other species, as well as producing their own thrilling sounds.
