WEIGHTLIFTING: LYNNE Rarua will be debuting for Team PNG at this year’s Oceania Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships in Melbourne, Australia. The 16-year-old is one of a team of six that will be competing in the three-day event (from April 11-13) and will be competing in 53kg in both the youth and junior events. “I’m proud that I’ve come this far and to have been chosen to represent my country.

” From Hanuabada village in Port Moresby, she started weightlifting around June last year. “My mother was the one who introduced me to weightlifting, I had always played netball and rugby and never considered this sport.” PNG Weightlifting President Dika Toua introduced me to many things.

She encouraged me along the way stressing that weightlifting is different from all other sports. “After all the earlier encouragement, I chose weightlifting. And today, I love the sport and the discipline it requires has made me committed to the sport.

” I am in grade 10 at St Joseph’s International Catholic College. Mixing my studies and the sport that I have come to love. I train under Dika Toua at the LDT Gym.

My mum, Hane Vele puts me in her charge and whatever happens to me she’s there to support. She thanks coach Willie Gavera and Dika Toua for helping her build her confidence, “Because when I first came to My parents are my priority. They’re always there, they’re always behind the scenes.

“But right now, because of them, I’m about to go represent my country.”.
