LSU football is breaking out a rarely used alternate jersey for its game against Vanderbilt

LSU revealed on social media it will wear a gold jersey Saturday night against Vanderbilt, a look the team has rarely used throughout its history. According to their record book, the only other times the Tigers wore gold jerseys were against Vanderbilt in 1996, Notre Dame in the 1997 Independence Bowl, at Florida in 1998 and Mississippi State in 2016. twitter.com/BzaEHkkLsG LSU has a 3-1 record in those games. The last time it wore a gold jersey, it beat Mississippi State 23-20 as running back Leonard Fournette rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

LSU did not say what color helmet and pants it will wear with the gold tops. The Tigers (6-4, 3-3 SEC) host the Commodores (6-4, 3-3) after losing their third straight game. Though the team traditionally wears gold helmets with white jerseys and gold pants, LSU will have worn an alternate uniform in five of its 11 games this season.

After wearing purple jerseys at home from 1983-94 because of NCAA rules, former LSU coach Gerry DiNardo convinced the governing body to let LSU wear white at home again beginning in the 1995 season. There was one condition: the visiting team had to give the Tigers permission to wear white, a rule that has since changed. The first team that did not let LSU wear white was Vanderbilt, where DiNardo had coached before taking the LSU job.

LSU debuted a new gold jersey in a 35-0 win. The only other time LSU has worn gold at home since then was against Mississippi State in 2016, and now it's wearing the color again against the Commodores..
