MANILA, Philippines – The weather bureau started to monitor two new low pressure areas on Sunday, October 6, with the first LPA inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility and the second LPA outside PAR. The first LPA formed at 8 am on Sunday, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in a briefing past 4 pm. As of 3 pm, the LPA was located 100 kilometers west northwest of Coron, Palawan, embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).
The ITCZ is a belt near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere meet. It was affecting Southern Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao on Sunday. Due to the LPA and the ITCZ, scattered rain and thunderstorms are hitting Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and the Visayas.
The ITCZ is also bringing isolated rain showers or thunderstorms to Mindanao. PAGASA said there may be flash floods or landslides during periods of moderate to heavy rain or severe thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the easterlies or warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean will cause isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon.

In contrast, the LPA outside PAR has a high likelihood of becoming a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.
But the second LPA remains far, at 2,525 kilometers east of Northern Luzon. It formed at 2 pm on Sunday. Further updates are expected in succeeding forecasts.
PAGASA estimates two or three tropical cyclones could form within or enter PAR in October. The next three local names are Kristine, Leon, and Marce. The country’s last tropical cyclone was Julian (Krathon) , which developed late September and was a super typhoon at its peak.
