There is another chance to see LS Lowry's masterpiece Going to the Match. It will go on display in Bury Art Museum as part of an upcoming football exhibition. The painting ‘Going to the Match’ will be part of the celebratory exhibition around football from October 4, 2024, to March 1, 2025.
The 1953 painting shows fans arriving for a Bolton Wanderers game at their former ground, Burnden Park . The painting was on display in Bolton last year, as part of a year-long tour of five North West venues. This is the last venue it will visit before returning home to The Lowry, Salford.
Boosted by a £95,000 grant from Arts Council England through its National Lottery Project Grants programme, the tour will mean this iconic painting can be enjoyed by the widest possible audience across the region. Also on display will be iconic photographs of football fans of various teams from the North West, such as Bury FC , Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool, Oldham and Bolton. Bury Art Museum has collaborated with the British Culture Archive, photographers Debs Parr, Richard Davis, Zoe Hitchen and Phil Hill to bring an "exciting perspective" on what it means to be a football fan.
Also, on display with be artefacts loaned by Bury Football Club fans. The painting was purchased for a record £7.8 million by The Lowry in Salford in 2022 thanks to a gift from The Law Family Charitable Foundation.
The venue is now working with venues across the North West to ensure that the piece can be enjoyed by audiences across the region, thanks to a £95,000 grant from Arts Council England through its National Lottery Project Grants programme and additional support from The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation..
