A longtime college football head coach is reportedly stepping down from his role and retiring from the sport this afternoon. Jim McElwain is reportedly leaving his role as the head coach at Central Michigan, according to a report from CBS Sports . The former Colorado State and Florida head coach reportedly became the subject of an ongoing NCAA investigation after former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions was spotted on the Chippewas sideline.

"The NCAA is seeking to determine if McElwain had a role in allowing Stalions on the sideline of the Chippewas' season opener against Michigan State," CBS Sports wrote at the time. When questioned about the matter, McElwain claimed he was not aware Stalions was on the team's sideline. "We .

.. were totally unaware of it," the coach told reporters at the time.

"I certainly don't condone it in any way, shape, or form, and I do know that his name was on none of the [sideline] passes that were let out." Matthew OHaren-Imagn Images McElwain rose to prominence in the collegiate football ranks after sparking a potent offense at Fresno State. He caught the eye of legendary coach Nick Saban and became the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide where he helped the team win two national titles.

Following his success at Alabama, McElwain landed his first head coaching job at Colorado State. He struggled in his first season, leading the team to a 4-8 record before completely turning the program around to a 10-2 team just two years later. He was eventually hired as the Florida Gators head coach where he was named the SEC Coach of the Year in his first season.

McElwain went 19-8 over the first two seasons at Florida, but wore his welcome out during the 2017 season. Two seasons later he took over as the head coach at Central Michigan, where he's been ever since. He racked up a 33-35 record with the team before eventually stepping down this week.
