Longstanding Consett gym 'Big Al's' announces sudden closure

Popular and long-standing County Durham gym 'Big Al's' is set to close on New Year's Eve, ending its 35-year stint in Leadgate.

Big Al's Gym on Front Street in Leadgate near Consett announced it would be closing on December 31 after its lease came to an end. Gym owner Alan Turner said: "35 years of putting the "lead" into Leadgate, big Al's gym has been forced to close. "So, as from December 31 we are closed, there is no possibility of us agreeing to new terms on the lease so we are forced to close.

"It has been one hell of a journey, made good friends and lost some, I am now retired (world champion and record holder) to everyone I know who I have mentored over the years I will still be available for advice and programs. "Good luck in your training. 'No pain no gain'.



" The announcement was met with sadness from residents of the village who took to social media to express their shock at the gym's closure. Jamie Welsh said: "Easily one of the worst things to happen to Leadgate in recent years. "All the best Al mate. Was a pleasure training at your gym.

"Both are amazing people who supported me throughout my own health issues the last few years and kept in touch, always checking in on me even when I was unable to make the journey up from Stanley for months at a time (something I did religiously 5 days a week since I was 18).".
