After more than a dozen years with the program, David Long has stepped down as the head coach of the Summerville Boys Basketball program. Long, on March 10, notified the high school’s administration he was resigning from the position for personal reasons. “I plan to stay in education but feel like the time is now to reduce my workload and spend more time with my family,” Long stated in a written statement sent to the Summerville Journal Scene and members of the Green Wave Basketball community.

“There are so many people I want to thank starting with the current administration team of AD Cory Magwood and Principal Dr. Michelle Leviner. I am so appreciative to former head coach Greg Elliott for bringing me on his staff in 2012.

Special thanks to former principal Kenny Farrell and former Athletic Directors Brion Rutherford and Matt Legare for entrusting me with the program since 2016.” Long served as an assistant basketball coach for four years prior to taking over as the head coach of the boys, a position he held the past nine years. While he served as an assistant basketball coach he also served as a head tennis coach.

Under Long’s guidance, the Summerville Varsity Boys won 64 percent of their basketball games. During the past five years, the team won 77 percent of games. During the last three seasons, it made a final four appearance and a pair of Elite 8 appearances.

It won 49 games during the past two seasons. Long helped the team capture several region championships and also helped several athletes sign to play college basketball. “It has been quite a ride,” Long said.

“None of the success could have been accomplished without our outstanding players, and I thank all former players for your trust and hard work over the years. Another special thank you to all the assistant coaches who have played a vital role in the success of the program. I am forever grateful to Green Wave Basketball, Summerville High School, and the Summerville community.

” Summerville finished the 2024-25 season with a 15-6 record after falling to Ridge View in the third round of the state playoffs. Ridge View went on to claim both the 5A, Division 1 Lower State Championship and State Championship..
