FARGO — A local high school band is looking for a new venue to perform at during the holidays now that a long-standing tradition has been canceled for 2024. Fargo North's Broadway Jazz ensemble has performed at the West Acres Shopping Center for more than 25 years. About two months ago, however, they learned the mall is limiting group sizes and only allowing certain instruments.
Their ensemble is made up of 20 students who play saxophones, trombones, trumpets, guitars and drums. Band director Kelsey Dragosavich said the students just want the opportunity to perform and that the publica can contact the school to set up a time for the band to perform at an event. "We like to have opportunities to perform that are meaningful for both students and those community groups.
So sometimes that is a maybe a nursing home or a care home. We like to attend some of the younger schools," Dragosavich said. "We have to deal with students in busing and transportation, of course, making sure that venues are not only appropriate, but are going to have a warm audience, people in the chairs or walking by, whatever that might look like.
" West Acres Mall said they will still host more than 50 live performances from smaller groups, saying less noise will better accommodate their tenants and shoppers..
