MANILA, Philippines – As many may have expected, young UP legend JD Cagulangan did not stay on the unemployment list for long, not even for a day. After his UAAP career ended with his second championship bonfire celebration at the UP Sunken Garden in Diliman, Quezon City, the newly minted Season 87 Finals MVP signed with the Korean Basketball League’s (KBL) Suwon KT Sonicboom on Monday, sources revealed on Tuesday, December 17. Cagulangan, per sources, wanted to try his luck out with local pro leagues like the MPBL and PBA but understandably prioritized any overseas offers that came his way.

The 24-year-old floor general is now set to prove his worth in Korea with a team that previously employed former Ateneo star Dave Ildefonso. Cagulangan is determined to blow away his new team’s coaches with his battle-tested skills as Ildefonso infamously saw sparse playing time with the Sonicboom, leading to the latter’s departure and return to the Philippines to play for the PBA. The La Salle high school ace, exiting the UAAP with two of only four men’s basketball titles in UP history, averaged 13.

7 points, 4.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.

3 steals, and just 1.7 turnovers in the Fighting Maroons’ hard-fought, three-game blockbuster finals series with Cagulangan’s former alma mater. Cagulangan is once again set to cross paths with collegiate rival and two-time UAAP MVP Kevin Quiambao , who also announced his move to Korea with the Goyong Sono Skygunners one day after the winner-take-all finals Game 3.
