LIV Golf star Cam Smith has explained that “a couple too many beers” were part of the reason for his viral stunt at the Masters . The 31-year-old went viral on Wednesday when he was spotted wearing a navy dress jacket to hit a few balls before taking to the iconic course. Typically, when players take to the range they are dressed in their golfing attire.
But Smith was suited and booted before his practice round as he attempted to get to grips with the course. He wore a golf shirt along with a navy suit, matching trousers and a jacket, accessorised with a red cap. Many felt that the Ripper Golf Club LIV star was getting ready for the green jacket, or the stunt was related to improving his performance for the week.
But Smith revealed that a conversation with the Greyson apparel brand, alongside a couple of beverages, prompted the choice of outfit. “Funny story,” he told FOX Sports . “I met Charlie [Schaefer], the Grayson guy, at [LIV Golf’s] teams week, and we had a couple of beers – and maybe even a couple too many beers – and we got to talking about fashion.
“He said, ‘It would be great if you wore a blazer at the Masters. I think it’s the place to do it, and I agreed to it.’ I’m a man of my word, so I did it.
” He added: “It was actually good, though. I mean, for how a sport coat or a blazer should feel, I was able to swing in it pretty easily. It was a bit chilly, so it kind of worked out.
It was pretty good. I wouldn’t say I’m a fashion guru by any standard, but I felt good in it.” The 2022 Open champion made a strong start to the Major with a one-under opening round, six shots back from overnight leader Justin Rose .
And Smith, hoping to be dressed to the nines again at the end of the weekend with a green jacket, believes his putting could be the key to success once more. “My putting seems unreal at the moment,” he added. “I feel like this whole start of the year I’ve hit a lot of good putts and even a lot of great shots and haven’t really got much out of it.
“Today, I definitely got the most out of my round, which is a good way to start. It gives you the confidence to go at some pins and do stuff you wouldn’t normally do and be aggressive.”.
