The North School Lions have been crowned champions of the Association of Colleges South East men’s division. They put in a virtuoso performance in their final game of the season as they romped to a 101-42 victory over The John Roan School, Greenwich. The match also was a last for the legendary class of 2025 - Kai-Guthrie-Turay, Harry Terry, Tom Johnson, Rehan Rai, Anita Kadiri, Daniel Pawley and Ralfs Aboms - ending their Lions’ careers with arguably the biggest title in the illustrious history of The North School Basketball Academy.
The Lions roared out of the gates as Johnson, Rai and Guthrie-Turay combined for 24 points to help the home team surge get into a 28-9 advantage. The second period saw John Roan switch to a zone in a bid to slow the tempo, but the Lions responded through Jerry and Anita Kadiri. The siblings combined for 10 points to push The North’s half-time lead to 48-20.
Guthrie-Turay and Johnson continued to flourish in the third quarter, pouring in 21 points for a 73-31 advantage, heading into the final quarter. And, after a slow-scoring start, Terry took flight. He got 13 straight points for The North, which included three consecutive triples.
The icing on the cake came as Jerry Kadiri converted a one-and-one play to take The North into triple digits for the first time this season to wrap up a historic year for the Lions. Head coach Andrew Sunderland reflected: “What a finish for a legendary class of seniors, who have undeniably left their mark on the culture and history of Lions Basketball. “To end their careers with a championship is just reward for their relentless work ethic and desire to improve day in and day out.
It has been my privilege to coach them. “They have made a huge impact on me as, both a coach and a person.” Guthrie-Turay led all scorers with 39 points to go with nine rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Rai recorded eight steals to set the all-time Lions record for steals in a single season at 118. Terry had 21 points on a staggering 60 per cent shooting from three-point range. Johnson filled the statistics sheet with an impressive 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
