Lionel Messi Creates History, Breaks All Time Record For Inter Miami

Lionel Messi created history in Major League Soccer (MLS) during Inter Miami's 1-1 draw against Toronto FC on Sunday, as the star forward surpassed Gonzalo Higuaín's feat for the most goal contributions for the club. Messi scored a stoppage-time goal in the first half to level the score three minutes after Toronto FC took the lead, hitting a half-volley with his left foot to beat Toronto’s Sean Johnson. He had scored in the first half as well, but his goal was cancelled after a VAR review determined that he committed a foul.

The legendary striker now has 44 goal contributions to his credit for Inter Miami from 29 matches. Messi scored 24 goals and provided assists for 20 more for the Herons. The former FC Barcelona star arrived in South Florida in the summer of 2023 and achieved some stunning feats in the league since.

After leading Inter Miami to the Leagues Cup win in his debut season, Messi played a pivotal role in Miami's 2024 Supporters' Shield-winning campaign, in which they set the single-season points record. Messi has been supremely consistent in the league and bagged the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award, scoring a staggering 20 goals and 16 assists in just 19 appearances. His goal on Sunday was his third of the season.

Messi has now surpassed the tally of his former Argentina teammate in the club record books. During Inter Miami's 2-1 win over Philadelphia Union, Messi struck in the 57th minute, which helped him equal Higuaín's tally. It brought his career tally with the club to 23 goals and 20 assists, totaling 43 goal involvements.

Higuaín, who played for Inter Miami from 2020–2022, achieved the feat in 67 appearances. In the meantime, scoring against Toronto FC was a landmark moment for Messi. Toronto FC were one of two clubs Messi had not scored against previously.
