One of Ireland’s most active private housing developers, Lioncor, plans to start work later this year on the first phase of a development which will ultimately see 1,500 dwellings built in Arklow town in county Wicklow. The masterplan for that development also includes two new schools and a local centre. Following An Bord Pleanála approval, John Maxwell, chief executive officer of Lioncor, told the Irish Independent that work will get underway later this year once detail design has concluded.
He expects to submit a planning application for a further 664 homes this month. Site works will be divided between two sites of 750 units each extending to a combined 186 acres at Kilbride on the north side of the town along the Avoca river and close to the Bridgewater Centre. That north side location will also provide easy access to the N11.
The first phase will include a mix of house types including detached, semi-detached and terraced houses ranging in size from two to three bedrooms as well as eight one-bedroom apartments and eight two-bedroom duplex apartments. The buildings will range in height from two to three storeys. This is good news for the town, as relatively few housing developments have been built in the town over the past 20 years as it awaited a new wastewater treatment plant which will shortly be commissioned.
Growth will be boosted by the town’s transport connections to Dublin, existing employment hubs, offshore wind developments and a data centre which Echelon recently commenced..
