Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have analysed Dominic Calvert-Lewin's miss at Aston Villa when he could have put Everton 3-1 up and believe the striker should take a leaf out of ace marksman Erling Haaland's book. Calvert-Lewin, who Shearer added played well and "was a handful," had earlier put the Blues 2-0 ahead at Villa Park when he headed in a free kick from Dwight McNeil in the first half. However, when he had the chance to restore Sean Dyche's side's two-goal cushion after the break, he squandered a golden opportunity when one on one with Emiliano Martinez – something he also did in the two sides' goalless draw at Goodison Park last season having been forced off in the corresponding fixture at Villa Park the previous August after a collision with Argentina's World Cup winning goalkeeper.

Both Shearer, who is the Premier League's all-time leading scorer with 260 goals, and Lineker, who netted 40 times in a single season with Everton in 1985/86, believed the Blues number nine should have been more like his Manchester City counterpart Haaland. Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said: "If you look at what happens, Haaland has been through twice in the last two or three weeks, one on one, he has always controlled the situation.
