Lily-Rose Depp has said she and her film star father are “very different actors”, while reflecting on her upbringing and career. The actress and model, 25, is the daughter of US actor Johnny Depp and French movie star and singer Vanessa Paradis, who split in 2012 and share two children together. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar UK, Lily-Rose discussed her latest movie, the gothic horror Nosferatu, and said she always hopes for “meaty” roles.
The star plays Ellen Hutter in the film, a reimagination of the 1922 German Expressionist film, which was hailed for setting the template for the horror films that followed. Discussing the film, which is directed by Robert Eggers, she said: “It’s not just scary, it’s gross, it’s revolting. It’s palpably effective.
“It’s the most technical set I’ve ever been on. It was almost like going to film school. “It was intimidating and daunting, but an incredible privilege.
I’m very proud, very excited.” Nosferatu also stars Skins actor Nicholas Hoult, Swedish movie star Bill Skarsgard, Poor Things actor Willem Dafoe, and Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor Johnson. Lily-Rose’s father is known for starring in several gothic horror films, such as Sleepy Hollow, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street.
She said she was “traumatised” after watching him in Edward Scissorhands, aged three, “not because I thought he was scary, but because everyone was being so mean to him and I got really upset”. The hit film, released in 1990, was directed by Tim Burton and starred Winona Ryder. Asked whether she and her father share an interest in the supernatural genre, she said: “I guess you could say so.
“We’re very different actors but, of course, you’re the product of your environment, and it’s a world I’ve always been very interested in.” She added: “I’m interested in the darker underbelly of things. As an actor, you hope that your role will be as meaty as can be, so you have as much to dive into as possible.
“The most exciting thing is getting to explore parts of myself. “You get to hide behind all these beautiful artifices, the costumes, the story, but the place I’m drawing from is deeply personal.” The actress, who previously dated Wonka star Timothee Chalamet, is currently in a relationship with American rapper 070 Shake, real name Danielle Balbuena, whom she described as “amazing”.
“Honestly, the most kind-hearted person”, she said. “I’m super in love and I’m super happy. I’ve always been really private about my personal life, but it’s hard not to talk about her because I’m so happy.
“It’s just when you know, you know.” Lily-Rose has also starred in HBO drama series The Idol and played Catherine of Valois in 2019 film The King. The February issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK is on sale from January 3.
