Esophageal cancer is a cancer arising from the esophagus—the food pipe that runs between the throat and the stomach. It is cancer 10th most common worldwide and the seventh leading cause of cancer deaths.
Alfonso said fashion was a powerful form of art and that it could be used for fighting cancer. The development also comes in the awake of a recent event where Alfonso showcased designs during dinner with guests from Boston Scientific, AfrECC Foundation (USA), UNC Malawi and the Malawi Embassy in USA. “Designers from 100 Year Plan and models showcased pieces at the event, which embodied the art of fighting in fashion.
The prints on the garments were designed with a powerful message on defeating esophageal cancer,” Alfonso said. She said she had a role to play in bringing awareness to people about esophageal cancer. “These designs are with significant distinctive symbols and it is all about dressing in style and showing that we are united in the fight against esophageal cancer,” Alfonso said.
During the presentation of a shirt to President Lazarus Chakwera, the team said it was honoured to present the exquisite, handcrafted shirt, crafted by Alfonso. The intricate embroidery on the shirt showcases a traditional Malawian art piece, depicting a bird catching a fish, which symbolises our unwavering nation’s resilience and strength”..
