Lil Nas X began the rollout for his next record, Dreamboy , with the release of its lead single, “Light Again,” last week. On Friday, the rapper and singer returned with another track off the project, dubbed “Need Dat Boy,” on which he gets honest about his life and career over a piano backing track. “Sorry darling I been down for a couple summers/Falling back in the crowd smokin’ marijuana,” he sings.
“I been angsty/I been hurtin’/I been tryin’/Shit ain’t workin’/Yeah I dream big/Yet I descend/These days I don’t know what I believe in.” Despite the track’s somber beginnings, the song slowly picks up towards the end, when Lil Nas samples Trina’s 2000 hit “Pull Over.” “I think I love that boy/I think I wanna get up on him/Ride up on that boy,” he sings in the post-chorus.
Lil Nas has not yet disclosed when exactly he plans on releasing Dreamboy , though he did recently take to X to share a little more about what listeners can expect on the record: “ Dreamboy isn’t just an album. It’s me coping with the loss of what once was and fighting for a new world. I’m so excited to bring you on the journey.
” The project will arrive as the follow-up to his debut album, Montero , which was released in 2021. Listen to Lil Nas X’s new track “Need Dat Boy” above..
