Honolulu's weather this week brings light showers, mild sea breezes, and decreasing swells, with advisories in effect for surfers and boaters.

Honolulu residents can expect a mild change in the weather as the week unfolds. According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, light to occasionally moderate east to southeasterly winds are coming our way, bringing favorable conditions for light showers and cloud cover in some areas. The windward regions should see overnight showers, while the leeward and interior zones could see this happen in the afternoons, thanks to sea breeze developments.

The latest updates suggest that sea breeze activity is petering out across the state while land breezes are kicking up within the prevalent east to southeasterly flow. This transition brings with it a bit of stability and disperses the shower activity during the evening and early morning hours as an upper-level ridge forms. Despite a lingering stationary front just north of Kauai, major weather disruptions are off the table for the moment, although southeasterly winds are expected to gain strength as the week advances.

Flying around the area looks clear for now, with the front north of the islands not causing any major issues. Tonight, expect east-southeasterly winds, shifting southeast and getting stronger on Tuesday. Pilots can expect drainage flows tonight and then calm sea breezes on Tuesday.

While a few showers may pop up inland in the afternoon, most conditions will be good for visual flight. The coastal waters will stay calm, with light to moderate winds through Tuesday night due to a weak front near Kauai and a high-pressure system to the east. Surfers can still enjoy big waves, as the large swell that peaked today is gradually easing.

The High Surf Advisory will stay in effect until Tuesday evening for north and west-facing shores. A smaller north swell is expected to pick up on Thursday, reaching its peak by Friday before calming down over the weekend. The Weather Service warns that while the larger northwest swell is easing, the High Surf Advisory is still in place until 6 PM HST Tuesday for several areas, including Niihau, Kauai Leeward, and the Waianae Coast.

Boaters should take heed as well, with the Small Craft Advisory lasting until early Tuesday morning for waters around Kauai and Maui..
