Police have arrested a fugitive rape convict from Khilkhet in the capital. Majnu who fled away from Kashimpur Central Jail during attacks after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, was arrested from the rail lines behind Kuratoli BRTC bus counter on Saturday midnight. He was later handed over to Cantonment police.

Majnu is a life-term convict in a case filed over rape of a female Dhaka University student at Kurmitola in the capital in 2020. DMP's Media and Public Relation Department's deputy commissioner of police Muhammad Talebur Rahman stated it to reporters on Sunday. Life term convict Majnu was at Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur.

But he managed to flee the prison during an attack on the jail on August 5 after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government, Rahman added. Then another case was filed with Kashimpur Police Station against him. In the evening of January 5, 2020, a female Dhaka University student was raped after getting down from the university bus on a silent footpath at Kurmitola.

The next day, the victim's father filed a case with Cantonment Police Station that led to a widespread protest demanding the arrest and trial of the rapist at different parts of the country including the DU. Later, different sections of the society across the country demanded capital punishment of the rapist. After three days into the rape, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested 30-year-old Majnu.

The victim student identified the rapist when a photo of Majnu was sent to her. After investigation, police submitted chargesheet to a court stating Majnu as the sole accused on March 16 of that year. Then on November 19 of that year, Dhaka's 7th Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal's judge Mosammat Kamrun Nahar gave Majnu life-term jail sentence in the case.

Then protest began at Dhaka University and other places demanding arrest of the rapist. However, police arrested Majnu three days after the rape incident. Dhaka's Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 Judge Kamrunnahar sentenced Majnu to life term imprisonment in November, 2020.
