Amongst preparing the burgers and sausages, the Liberal Democrat leader will also call on the government to “flip” their point of view “and get behind British businesses”, following recent comments around the Lib Dems’ ‘Buy British’ campaign. Sir Ed will meet farmers and lead a cookout alongside Bicester and Woodstock MP Calum Miller. This comes after the Labour government faced backlash from the farming community after it announced plans to cap inheritance tax relief for farms worth more than £1million.
There have been in Oxford and Banbury in recent weeks. The campaign is a call on the government to take action in response to Trump’s tariffs by encouraging people to buy British, alongside a raft of serious measures to unleash the potential of our businesses including overhauling business rates, scrapping the jobs tax and fixing our trading relationship with the EU. The party has also campaigned for the scrapping of the Family Farm Tax.
Liberal Democrat research has found that in Bicester employees could face a nearly £3,000 hit on their finances over the next five years following the announcement. Sir Ed said: “I’m looking forward to hearing from farmers here in Bicester, and swapping my suit jacket for an apron to do some barbecuing in this fantastic weather. “Liberal Democrats are backing Oxfordshire’s amazing small businesses with our Buy British campaign, to support them in the face of Trump’s tariffs.
“We know the Chancellor has a lot on her plate, but she needs to flip her point of view and get behind British businesses. “Every vote for the Liberal Democrats counts. It's a vote to elect a strong local champion who will fight for a fair deal for you and your community.
” Mr Miller added: “Liberal Democrats here in Oxfordshire and across England will always work hard to support our farmers, particularly in the wake of Trump’s tariffs that are so damaging to our small businesses. “It’s why the Buy British campaign is critical. "It’s the best safeguard against Trump’s trade war, and the only way to unleash the potential of our businesses by overhauling business rates, scrapping the jobs tax and fixing our trading relationship with the EU.
“Ministers also need to rule out making concessions to Trump that would damage our local farmers by slashing standards. We need to send Trump a clear message that Britain will not be bullied.” When challenged on the family farm tax in parliament earlier this year, environment secretary Steve Reed said “the vast majority” of those who claim Agricultural Property Relief relief will not pay anything, and added that the government is looking to create a new deal for farmers to stop them being undercut in trade deals.
