Liam Johnson races to victory in cross country league

ST HELENS Sutton AC runners contested the second fixture in the Manchester and District Cross Country League which took place at Kenworthy Woods in Wythenshawe on Saturday

Held at the University Playing Fields on a gently undulating course there were a number of fine performances for St Helens Sutton AC on the day, including Liam Johnson winning the under 17s men's race and helping the team into third place. Also, Bobby Birketts achieved eighth position in the under 15s boys race, Lily Birkett fifth in the under 17s women’s event and Lucy Clitheroe sixth in the senior women’s race. Under 13s girls, 3.5km, A team eighth: Sophia Hunter: 17mins 1sec (22nd), Tess Mullen 17mins 43secs (33rd), Sophie Lang 17mins 45secs (34th). B team 15th: Sophia Bagdonavicuis 18mins 48secs (45th), Melissa Goddard 18mins 51secs (47th), Lily McKeegan 20mins 40secs (65th).

Under 13s boys, 3.5km, team 14th: Woody Deane 17m 58s (42nd), Lucas Vine 18m .04s (43rd), James Goddard 18m 24s (47th) .

Senior men, 9.6km, team 19th, vets 29th: Tom Griffiths 36mins 44secs (59th), Dan Cooke 36mins 52secs (62nd), Steve Anders 38mins 15secs (98th), Michael Brussels 39mins 54secs (142nd), Andy Wilson 40mins 56secs (174th), Alan McKeegan 45mins 47secs (321st), Alan Mahoney 51mins 16secs (437th), Paul Brownbill 52mins 38secs (453rd).

Later on the same day, two of the club’s athletes travelled to Barrowford, Lancashire, to compete in the prestigious Podium 5k on one of the UKs fastest courses. Charlie Roberts and Lucy Fairclough made the journey worthwhile as they were both rewarded with new personal bests. Roberts posted a time of 14mins 41secs and Fairclough 16mins 52secs.

Meanwhile, Liam Major finished third overall in the 3 Counties 5 mile Off Road Race organised by Billinge Running Club, recording 32mins 23secs..
