Lahore High Court has ordered Transport Department to prepare SOPs for registration of motorcycle rickshaws, reported 24NewsHD TV channel. Justice Shahid Karim while hearing the case related to smog prevention on Friday ordered Transport Department to ensure registration of every rickshaw sold by authorized dealers. Court hinted at cancelling and sealing licenses of motor rickshaw manufacturers who fail to comply within three months.
Court called Transport Department’s letter on fitness certificates of rickshaws as love letter and expressed anger over the Transport Department for not writing a proper letter to the manufacturers. Justice Shahid Karim suggested that tourist spots should be identified in Lahore and people should walk on this road for one or two days. Traffic police, Excise and Transport Department should take action against unregistered rickshaws, Punjab government lawyer suggested.
Motorcycle rickshaw manufacturers should submit a detailed report of their authorized dealers to the Transport Department, Justice Shahid Karim ordered. Punjab government lawyer informed the court about the procedure for registering rickshaws. Justice Shahid Karim ordered that authorized dealers of rickshaws will bound the buyer to obtain a fitness certificate within 15 to 20 days.
Give up to a month's time, if the fitness certificate of rickshaws is not obtained, then stop the production of all rickshaws, Justice Shahid Karim directed. This is not a matter of love and if action is not taken, suspend the licenses of the manufacturers, Justice Shahid Karim ordered. Justice Shahid Karim suggested LDA should have a tourism wing and should find an area where tourism can be promoted.
Justice Shahid Karim further suggested Mall Road should be closed for one or two days and people should be required to walk. LD This move of LDA will give a good impression of Pakistan all over the world, Justice Shahid Karim remarked. During the hearing, Deputy Attorney General Asad Ali Bajwa, Deputy Director Environment Ali Ijaz appeared before court.
Members of the Environmental Commission Syed Kamal Haider, LDA, PHA, and representatives of traffic also appeared. The court adjourned the hearing of the case till May 2..
