LG Display has potentially revolutionized the concept of "flexible" displays. On Friday, the South Korean firm introduced a prototype for the world's first genuinely stretchable display, which can expand by 50% without compromising image quality. This prototype boasts a 12-inch screen that can stretch to 18 inches while preserving a high resolution of 100 pixels per inch and full RGB colour.

LG refers to this advancement as "ultimate display technology." Unlike existing flexible displays that merely bend or fold, these new displays can genuinely transform, twist, and stretch into various configurations.
This innovation paves the way for numerous applications across a wide range of industries. The project is part of a national initiative led by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, which commenced in 2020. LG Display heads a consortium of 19 research institutions participating in this endeavor.
While the original goal was a 20% elongation rate, the team managed to double this figure through innovative technologies, including a specialized silicon substrate material typically used in contact lenses and a novel method for display wiring. Durability represents a significant attribute of this technology. LG Display asserts that the prototype is capable of enduring up to 10,000 cycles of stretching.
Furthermore, the display utilizes a micro-LED light source that measures a mere 40 micrometers, which guarantees consistent image quality even under extreme temperature variations or physical impacts. During the event, the company showcased various applications of the display, including a curved automotive interface that responds to touch gestures and a wearable display designed for integration into firefighters' uniforms, providing real-time access to critical information. LG anticipates that this innovative technology will find extensive applications across multiple sectors, including fashion, wearables, and the mobility industry.
