LG Electronics announced on October 28 that it participated in the '5GAA (5G Automotive Association)' conference in Berlin, Germany, from October 21 for four days. During the event, LG showcased 'Soft V2X,' an integrated traffic safety solution, which is a core technology for future mobility. Soft V2X is a cloud-based service that utilizes vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication technology to anonymously collect data on the location, direction, and speed of pedestrians and vehicles.
By sharing and analyzing this data, it provides real-time warnings to users when potential risks are detected. 5GAA is a global vehicle communication association that includes companies such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, GM, Vodafone, V2X companies like Commsignia, and automotive parts suppliers such as Bosch and Denso, in addition to LG Electronics. Soft V2X interacts with smart roadside units (RSUs) installed on roads to provide essential information for safe driving, like traffic signals and nearby road conditions.
It can also be applied to autonomous vehicles and delivery robots through embedded software. During the conference, LG Electronics demonstrated the Soft V2X traffic safety solution on the streets of Berlin. Attendees highly praised the solution's effectiveness and level of completion.
For instance, if a vehicle approaches an unsignalized crosswalk and detects a pedestrian or cyclist, the smart RSU or Soft V2X app analyzes the information and alerts the driver to decelerate or adjust direction immediately. LG Electronics applied the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) V2X standards to this solution and had previously showcased the Soft V2X solution with the SAE V2X standards in North America. Throughout the conference, LG Electronics aimed to strengthen its network with 5GAA members and representatives from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), solidifying collaboration with global partners and exploring additional business opportunities.
Hak-Sung Kim, a Fellow at LG Electronics CTO C&M Standards Research Center, gave a presentation on 'Steps for the Evolution of V2X,' outlining the future direction of V2X technology based on ongoing pilot projects' results. Jay Lee, CTO of the C&M Standards Research Center at LG Electronics, stated, "We will continue to research and develop traffic safety and autonomous driving solutions like Soft V2X to strengthen our leadership in the global market.".
