LG companies cut 4.25 mil. tons of emissions in 2023

Seven of LG Group's affiliates reduced carbon emissions by 4.25 million tons last year as part of the conglomerate's efforts to achieve net zero status by 2050, meaning the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere will be balanced by the amount removed, the group announced on Sunday.

25 million tons last year as part of the conglomerate's efforts to achieve net zero status by 2050, meaning the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere will be balanced by the amount removed, the group announced on Sunday. LG published a report titled “LG Net Zero Special Reporting,” which details the emission reduction achievements of seven companies over the past year and outlines their environmental targets. The companies included are LG Electronics, LG Display, LG Innotek, LG Chem, LG Energy Solution, LG Household & Healthcare and LG Uplus.

According to the report, the companies reduced a total of 4.25 million tons of carbon emissions last year, which is equivalent to creating a forest spanning around 106,000 football fields. Of the total reduction, 1.

05 million tons of carbon emissions were directly cut through measures like LG Display’s removal of harmful gases from its production processes and LG Chem’s reduction of fossil fuel usage by utilizing hydrogen fuel. Additionally, the affiliates collectively reduced around 3.2 million tons of carbon emissions by transitioning to renewable energy sources for their power needs.

LG announced plans to reduce its carbon emissions by 34 percent by 2030 and 52 percent by 2040, compared to 2018 levels, with a goal of achieving net zero by 2050. Among its affiliates, LG Electronics aims to reach net zero by 2030, while LG Innotek and LG Energy Solution target 2040. The group said it is also encouraging affiliates to use renewable energy, aiming to meet 76 percent of its total energy demands with renewable sources by 2030, 89 percent by 2040 and 100 percent by 2050.

“After publishing our first group-wise emission cut report, we have summarized the current status of LG companies’ ongoing carbon neutrality efforts, achievements and future plans to outline how LG Group will achieve net zero in 2050,” an LG official said. “LG will continue to achieve tangible carbon neutrality through consistent efforts and proactively address the climate crisis to pave the way for a sustainable future for the next generation.”.
