Letter: I should not be paying a higher percentage of taxes on my income than millionaires and billionaires.

Congress’ actions on tax cuts is disappointingI am very disappointed in our Congress. The members of Congress are supposed to represent their constituents and instead they toe the line and help the wealthy. I should not be paying a higher percentage of taxes on my income than millionaires and billionaires.

Our leaders should make sure the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share in taxes in order to ensure everyone can go to work, raise kids and contribute to our communities. This means advancing a permanent child tax credit, as well as child care, health care, nutrition assistance, care for the aging and people with disabilities, and paid family and medical leave. Our tax contributions aren’t just expenses — they’re investments in the systems that allow all of us to thrive.

Patricia B. Scott Upper Milford TownshipTrump’s character means trouble for the countryBy now, everyone knows that President Trump is incapable of admitting defeat or admitting wrong. He will never apologize, regardless of how egregious his words or actions, since such displays of humanity are antithetical to the Trump brand.

Decades ago, Trump was mentored by the infamous and cutthroat attorney Roy Cohn, who cut his eye teeth during the Joseph McCarthy years. Cohn would stop at nothing in order to destroy his opponents. His Machiavellian-like tutelage of a young and impressionable Donald Trump surely reverberates inside the president’s head, for it was Cohn who taught Trump to never apologize; never concede; never admit defeat; never admit wrongdoing; never give in; fight to the bitter end; and always drag your adversaries through the courts.

Trump’s bullying tactics with China vis-a-vis his massive 145% tariff shows disrespect to the Chinese to such an extent that our president may finally have met his match. Playing a game of “chicken” with President Xi Jinping isn’t the same as threatening to primary a wayward Republican House member. Trump’s inability to throttle back with Xi could potentially provoke China to seize the moment and seize the land — namely, the island of Taiwan.

Bob FriedAllentownHodges and Peischl earned reelection to South Whitehall boardAs a former South Whitehall commissioner, I strongly endorse Monica Hodges and Chris Peischl for reelection as South Whitehall commissioners.I advocate for their reelection based on their excellent transparent governance that they provide for South Whitehall citizens, who should vote for Monica and Chris to continue their beneficial accomplishments.Monica and Chris have demonstrated strong leadership while presiding over the complete, challenging, transformational change that has placed South Whitehall Township in its current strong position.

The township has an extremely qualified township manager and operations director who serve the citizens and businesses with unquestionable dedication and work ethic; strong professional financial management and a balanced budget; a recently hired chief of police who has nearly three decades of exemplary performance at another police department; and three very strong volunteer fire companies and exceptional Emergency Management Services.South Whitehall Community Development has a new comprehensive plan and zoning ordinances and land preservation is coming to fruition via the Jordan Valley Overlay.I am very proud of Monica Hodges and Chris Peischl for serving on the South Whitehall Board of Commissioners that has accomplished all these tremendous achievements.

Vote for Monica Hodges and Chris Peischl in the May 20 primary election.Michael WolkMillsboro, Del.The writer is a former South Whitehall Township commissioner.

Trump acting as if he wants to be kingPresident Trump golfed while the stock market went into free fall following his announcement of dramatic new tariffs. So now Trump, evidently, has control over my life savings, my hard-earned, hard-saved and carefully invested nest egg that makes my retirement the reward of a lifetime’s work. That is personal property, but evidently, under Trump, no longer really mine.

Kings used to have this kind of control of their subjects and what they owned.Trump completely rules the Republican Party, but it seemed that he wanted a similar international power. He wanted all those countries to call him to negotiate, as if international relations were no different than a real estate transaction.

A trade balance between the U.S. and another country can happen when we both produce things the other needs, wants and can afford.

But it’s a big world out there with all kinds of different people and cultures. Europeans are unlikely to drive a 3.7-liter double-cab pickup for vanity.

Call your representatives. Tell them this is a democracy based on laws and property ownership. Tell them to rein in this wannabe monarch.

Vicky WoodardMoore TownshipThank you to hospital staffMy wife was admitted to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg on March 26 with a serious painful kidney infection. She had two types of bacterial infections. I would like to commend Dr.

George Abraham and his health care team. Dr. Abraham quickly identified my wife’s painful sickness.

He explained in great detail his medical approach to the situation and strategy to combat the bacteria. Within 24 hours after being admitted, she was on her way to full recovery. The health care team of nurses and techs were just wonderful.

We felt like we were all family members during her stay. Dr. Abraham and his health care team should be commended by LVH administrators for their compassionate effectiveness.

Anthony A. KaramAllen TownshipPresident’s clean bill of health is ironicIt is highly ironic that President Trump at the age of 79 has been pronounced by the White House examining physician as “fully fit” to serve as commander in chief of all of the armed forces of the United States, whereas in his early 20s he received a draft deferment based upon the medical opinion of a podiatrist who had a relationship with his father that Trump suffered from bone spurs. As a result, he was not drafted and did not have to go to Vietnam.
