You came into existence at the moment your egg was fertilized in your mother’s womb. Your life was confirmed the first time your fertilized egg split and reproduced. That’s the only time you were “new.

” After that, you simply grew, as you continue to do. Your mother shared her body to protect and nourish your body as you grew. You were a burden on her and she had to sacrifice her comfort, her convenience, her health and even her wealth, but she allowed you to live, to be able to be the adult you are now.

Unborn children are not a clump of lifeless cells and their presence is not a disease. They did not produce themselves. The majority of the time, their mothers willingly participated in their creation.

That baby’s body is not “their mother’s body.” It belongs to the child. Thank your mother for allowing you to live and pass on the gift.

Anthony Scarselletti Lehigh Township I think it’s great that Mayor Reynolds of Bethlehem has reduced Bethlehem’s debt and would like to cover future costs utilizing federal funds from the infrastructure bill and American Rescue Plan. I think other municipalities should follow that example. Wonder why the national debt is so large? Paul Koba Durham Township In a recent letter the writer characterizes the 192 member states of the United Nations, other than the U.

S., as “freeloaders.” Had he bothered to check the facts, he would have learned that most of these members pay their fair share on time and without conditions.

It is only the United States that has accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars in arrears over many years. Because the United States is the U.N.

’s largest contributor, its deadbeat behavior often causes a severe cash crunch which adversely affects the organization’s ability to carry out the humanitarian, peacekeeping, economic development and other activities which the member states have approved. In addition, the local and national economic impact of the U.N.

headquarters and related activities is enormous. The organization employs thousands of people who buy hundreds of millions of dollars of goods and services, pay taxes, buy homes, and patronize local businesses. There is no freeloading.

Tom Repasch Bethlehem The writer is a former senior advisor to the United States Mission to the United Nations. It was always nice to say “I am proud to say we have a proper president.” But at 92 years of age, it is not possible for the first time, to repeat anything close.

Donald Trump has no respect for women, lets Putin have what he wants and said Hitler did some good things. God Bless America. We will need it.

Richard H. Ritter Lower Macungie Township The voters have made their choice. Choices do have consequences.

Vitriol was chosen over civility, fear was chosen over understanding, misogyny was chosen over women’s rights, hatred chosen over inclusion, dictatorship over democracy. Mr. Putin must be so happy.

God help Ukraine. God help us all. Rose Brauchle Salisbury Township Devastated.

Frightened. Sad. Oh so sad.

For our young people. For my grandson. For the young women.

For the future of our country and the world. I am shocked at the red wave of anger that has swept over our country. I am sad for our allies who used to be able to rely on us and us on them.

The world order has changed in an instant. I don’t know if I will live to see another presidential election. But I pray that I will live long enough to see our great and proud nation recover from what ails it.

My hope is that democracy will survive, and that our young people will live to see our democracy thrive. May God have mercy on our country. Rosalyn Metzger Hanover Township, Northampton County The system is broken.

The Central Catholic division AAA Girls Volleyball team went undefeated in the regular season having lost only one set. They decidedly beat Division AAAA Parkland twice in the regular season and again in the playoffs They swept Division AAAA Emmaus twice in regular season play. Central lost to Southern Lehigh in the Division AAA district tournament.

Post districts, Parkland won the Division AAAA District against Emmaus. Both teams, the winner and loser, move on to play in the state tournament. But Central, ranked second in Pennsylvania, second in Division AAA and second in the Philadelphia region, did not get to play in the states.

It doesn’t seem right that the No. 2 team in the state stays home. Albert Jinks Forks Township I don’t want to hear “this isn’t who we are.

” This is who we are. The majority has spoken, and that is democracy in action. I’m saddened that they chose corruption, lies, hatred, misogyny, bigotry and fascism.

What happened on Election Day may not be who I am, but it does reflect the society in which I live — and which I now feel naive and stupid to have believed did not exist. This is who we are as a country, but we don’t have to be that as individuals. If your values were not reflected in the election outcome, focus on your little corner of your community and choose to be the good you wanted to triumph.
