Town hallsI attended the 2017 Kempsville Town Hall meeting hosted by then-Congressman Scott Taylor where those angered by the election of Donald Trump were encouraged by local Democratic Party leaders to be as loud, disrespectful and confrontational as possible, despite Taylor having only just been sworn into office.Recently, I also attended the rather comical “Cardboard Town Hall” held at Virginia Wesleyan University and heard many of the same laments as were parroted in 2017.I can’t really blame U.
S. Rep Jen Kiggans for not attending, especially in light of the fact that while decrying the alleged loss of freedoms, people are firebombing Tesla dealerships and vandalizing their fellow American’s property because they now hate Elon Musk. There simply is no discussion to be had with those who feel just screaming louder or committing acts of political violence proves your point.
Meanwhile, our southern border is more secure than it has been in many years and some of the worst central/south American gang members are being frog-marched off of military transports into a tough prison. If America can handle a presidency where Joe Biden wasn’t even in charge of his mental faculties, we can certainly survive four years of Trump.Jimmy Frost, Virginia BeachDivisionsRe “Rhetoric” (Your Views, March 27): This recent letter says a lot about the divisions in the country.
Calling people who disagree with you “deranged partisans” is not expressing an opinion, it is hateful and divisive. It is also an example of someone claiming to have the facts actually adding more falsehoods, which seems to be a specialty of President Donald Trump and Republicans. We saw on the news word-for-word the planned attack on Yemen, but the president said it was not confidential information.
Is the letter writer aware that all of the draconian cuts being made will only make a fraction of a dent in the deficit? We are losing a generation of talented doctors and scientists. The VA will experience cuts to medical research on drugs and other therapies designed to help veterans deal with PTSD. Is this what the writer wants? If the cuts were about efficiency, the government would not be contracting for a new fighter jet, which is not needed in this era of drones.
No, this is about politics, sticking it to the Democrats and following the Project 2025 playbook, which does not represent a majority of Americans.Gary Rotfus, Virginia BeachRash movesIn one of the world’s first nations to be led by a man or woman chosen from the laypeople, Jephthah did everything for the good of the people, until his brash act brought tragedy. The otherwise heroic leader won battles against his nation’s enemies.
But his rash oath, made in the heat of battle, was that he would sacrifice the first thing he saw coming out of his door when he returned home after leading Israel’s armies to victory. He betrayed those who counted on him since it was his own daughter who rushed out to meet him.Well-meaning doesn’t always accomplish the “good” of others, especially if a leader receives ill advice that is not vetted by a just and well thought-out process that’s implemented judiciously.
One such “daughter” of our democratic republic (a MAGA supporter), is the wife of an evangelist. She was shocked when she and everyone she works with received Elon Musk’s buyout. Her job — counseling members of our military with PTSD — is necessary and important.
For people such as Musk and our president who have billions to fall back on, this was a fast, easy decision; but as Benjamin Franklin taught, “Haste makes waste!” That’s what happens when oligarchs wield chainsaws.Linda S. Waits, ChesapeakeSign up for Viewpoints, an opinion newsletter.

Letters for April 5: Trump opponents taking the wrong approach

Letter writers discuss Democrats' tactics at town halls, divisions in the country, and the risk of 'rash' decisions.
