cult job well Hats off, kudos, and thank you for your service El Paso County Coroner and Chief Medical Examiner Dr Leon Kelly. (Kelly will step down as coroner, Wednesday’s Gazette ) He has handled a difficult job with passion, competency, and remarkably, a sense of humor. I would imagine that his staff will be sorry to see him go, but happy that it his decision and will afford him as he stated “a better work/life balance.

” His involvement with the El Paso County Youth Suicide Prevention Workgroup and Youth Suicide Prevention Collaborative speaks volumes about his character. His plans to give back by teaching and helping young medical students is one more example. Congratulations and best wishes to you and your family.

Billy Greer Colorado Springs For decades, particularly in these past eight years, City Planning, the Planning Commission, and the majority of the City Council have demonstrated what the visiting monks present (Gazette, Tuesday) —the impermanence of life, and most certainly Colorado Springs history. Nothing lasts forever. Planning and Council are ensuring that fate.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s election time. These taxpayer-funded agencies have planned with developers for areas of our city and history to be blighted to wheedle money from us to hand to developers without allowing taxpayers to vote on these issues.

Unnecessarily blighting areas casts a cunning shadow upon city leadership (“Plans for skyscraper in downtown Colorado Springs rely on ‘blight’ designation,” Colorado Politics, Oct 9). In my 40 years in Colorado Springs, I’ve observed some of our elected officials and city staff executing hellacious motions to blight areas, go against city code and put residents in disastrous situations through overdeveloping (the continuing plight southeast of 21st and Cimarron streets, for example). Is an end in sight to this city’s destruction? Leigh Westin Colorado Springs The Fed Chairman, Jerome Powell, has just expressed in a news conference, “the true driver behind the housing crisis.

” In his words, “we have and are on track to continue to have not enough housing.” Our shortage is about 4.5 million homes, as of 2022.

It doesn’t take a mental giant to realize this might possibly be due to the influx of 11 million plus illegals who have been pouring over our borders, unchecked for drugs, disease, and criminal backgrounds, over the last three and a half years. Could this maybe contribute to a housing shortage? Duh! How about also contributing to super high inflation, and overall cost of living crisis that is out of control? Finally now Kamala Harris thinks we could close the border. That’s like closing the door after the horse is out of the barn! Is this the wisdom we want to be in charge of the country? If so, vote for another four years of misery.

If not, vote for the one who can get us back on track to being great again, safe again and affordable again! Only former President Donald Trump can make it happen. It’s a simple solution! Joan Barnes Colorado Springs Honest election certifi Election certification is the foundation of our democracy, ensuring the integrity and legitimacy of every election. It is a nonpolitical process that is the backbone of our democracy.

After votes are counted — whether cast in person, early, or by mail — local officials verify and canvass the results, often conducting post-election audits to ensure accuracy. This process is not just procedural; it safeguards the peaceful transfer of power and upholds the core of our democracy. Certification guarantees that each vote matters and that elections reflect the will of the people.

At a time when election integrity faces misinformation and partisan attacks, it’s vital that we demand clean, honest, and fair certification in every state. Without it, we risk eroding trust in our democratic system. Rep.

Adam Kinzinger and organizations like Country First are working tirelessly to defend this critical process through initiatives such as the Election Certification Fund. They are standing up to protect fair elections and ensure that certification remains transparent and trustworthy. We must support these efforts to secure the future of our democracy.

Let’s make sure that every election is properly certified, and every vote is counted. Joshua Richards Castle Rock Realizing that most of the world is not American, I believe that our president’s leadership when interacting with other nations, including NATO and the U.N.

, is the most critical election issue. However, I have heard little from either candidate concerning their anticipated role in this task. I have always considered that being a respected leader in our country’s international relations is the most difficult and necessary task of our president.

“Make America Great Again” is only possible if we are the leader of nations that can take actions that will enhance our survivability. Isolation, e.g.

such our position beginning of WWI and WWII, emboldens those who hate us. Germany’s surprise attacks on “peace in our times” European nations in the late 1930s and Japan’s surprise December 1941 attack on the “isolated from the world” United States are examples. We need the presidential candidates to inform us of their international goals so we can select a respected presidential leader for the United States of America and the world.
