Letter: Where are Republican values?

The Jim Leach memorial March 19 at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City was a great experience. Seeing so many Republicans I worked with who, like me, are no longer Republicans was reaffirming.

The Jim Leach memorial March 19 at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City was a great experience. Seeing so many Republicans I worked with who, like me, are no longer Republicans was reaffirming. We fought against government excesses and the hypocrisy of the Democrat-controlled congress of the '70s, '80s and '90s.

Jim Leach was a big supporter of Robert Michael but the Newt Gingrich takeover of the Republican party brought a condition that you can’t talk to or work with the enemies — defined as anyone from the other party. Today the Leach and Glickman sponsored U.S.

Peace Institute was shut down when police were called to remove the staff. I left the Republican party when GW Bush swift boated John Kerry. GW Bush sold America on a fictitious weapons of mass destruction scenario and then attacked Kerry over one of his three Purple Hearts.

Back to Republican values: Where is the tea party today? The Republicans just increased the federal debt limit into the stratosphere — primarily for tax breaks to the billionaires. The DEI and Critical Race Theory dialogue is just to divert attention from the tax breaks for the billionaires. Who is in charge? Musk, Bezos and Trump? Yikes! So glad to see Christina Bohannan and Tom Harkin paying tribute to Jim Leach today.
