Letter: Violent crime particularly scary for women

How can Tulsa citizens keep each other safe? What can local law enforcement do to prevent more incidents similar to this from happening? asks Berea Fowler of Tulsa.

I am concerned for my safety following the murder of a woman only three blocks from my house. How can we prevent the murder of women locally? This issue is not something we should have to worry about, and we need to do something to fix it. Tasha Shepard was found dead about 1 a.

m. on Oct. 23 while I was sound asleep nearby.



Midtown Tulsa is not known to be unsafe, so this is alarming news for everyone, and especially for young women, such as the victim, because safety is a constant concern for us. As a young woman, I must be mindful and take precautions because although I don’t walk alone at night, my friends and I often hang around that area. This story makes my skin crawl.

Though the suspect is currently behind bars, my concern for the safety of Tulsa’s female residents has skyrocketed after becoming aware of this incident. People are also reading..

Consider stricter safety regulations, more security officers and provide women with self-defense strategies and tools. I carry pepper spray almost every day, but I wonder if that will suffice in the future.
