Picture this: It is the annual Veterans Day parade, and as our military veterans march by, row by row, we proudly salute or raise our hands to our hearts out of respect and appreciation. Let’s look at this in another way: Instead of calling them “military veterans” we called them “government workers”? Does this change your mental image? Those who serve in the military work for the government. For the 23 million non-military government workers employed at the federal, state or local level, there is no holiday honoring their service.
Government workers pave the streets and plow them after a blizzard, they make the laws, see that they are enforced, and that justice is done. They include teachers, librarians, university professors, medical professionals and scientists. They deliver the mail, fight fires, prevent floods and enforce health and safety regulations.
Government workers make sure it’s safe to step into an elevator or deposit money in a bank. Turning on a faucet with safe drinking water — that simple act is made possible by government workers. People are also reading.
.. We owe a lot to government workers.
