Letter: Taxpayers should not be on the hook for Brent VanNorman's election recount

Perhaps it makes more sense for the candidate to be responsible for the cost of their requested recount, says S. Addison Beeson of Tulsa.

Tulsa mayor candidate and third place finisher Brent VanNorman requested a manual recount of election results after missing second place by just over 400 votes. He just wanted to make sure of election integrity, even though it has been proven previously that Oklahoma has a very secure and accurate polling system. The votes changed very minimally and Monroe Nichols and Karen Keith will advance to a runoff election on Nov.

5. Unfortunately, this cost taxpayers approximately $40,000. VanNorman only paid $12,000.

Why should the taxpayers be responsible for the majority of this cost? With such an accurate system in our state, perhaps it makes more sense for the candidate to be responsible for the cost of their requested recount. This might dissuade future candidates from a recount when the vote is not close. People are also reading.
