I would like to send a big shout-out to music educators and music students at Rock Island High School. On Saturday, Nov. 9, I had the highest pleasure of attending the Illinois Music Education Association District 2 Jazz Festival at Galesburg High School.
Rock Island High School had a sizable representation of students who tried out for this festival, practiced the music through a long day of rehearsals under noted jazz music educators and specialists, and presented a delightful and moving concert in the evening. I would like to thank Mr. Scott Voigt, director of cChoirs; as well as Mr.
Pete Carlin and Mr. Derek Ross, band directors, for encouraging and preparing students to try out for and to support them in their participation in this prestigious event. At the end of this wonderful evening the audience was given a charge to “tell somebody about what you just heard.
” I want to share with readers how hard high school students work to participate in a worthwhile and educational event and what beautiful music they create. I want to share how diligently dedicated music educators work inside and outside of the classroom. Finally, I want to share with readers how well these students and educators represent Rock Island High School.
When you have a chance, please show your appreciation for teachers and administrators who support the participation in music education in your schools and communities. Ann Austin Rock Island Get opinion pieces, letters and editorials sent directly to your inbox weekly!.
