I am thankful first and foremost for the general good health and well being of my family and friends. Most of my friends are “elderly” contemporaries who still enjoy good camaraderie, food, and drink. We are not going gently into the night.

I am thankful for all those good souls who provide some measure of comfort and support to the poor, underprivileged and homeless in our society. Imagine how much worse these issues would be without their good work. I am thankful to live in Chico which as a city has more balance in attitudes and lifestyles than most cities in America.

I hope that the last election will provide more balance on the city council. I believe balance in governing is necessary. I am thankful that I live in California which protects the fundamental rights of all of its citizens and acts as a buffer to those who seek to limit those rights.

There is much more to be thankful for but like most of us I forget sometimes. — Bruce Alpert, Chico.
