Letter: OSSAA dead week rule harmful to some sports

While I understand how this rule could be necessary for other sports, I think the OSSAA should implement exceptions for some sports and scenarios, says 13-year-old John Robert Waldo.

I’m an 8th-grade student swimming for SwimTulsa out of the Union 6th and 7th Grade Center. Every summer at the height of the swim season, we have to move to a different pool and our coach. That is because our coach is also the head coach for Union’s swimming team and that is an OSSAA dead week, meaning our coach isn’t allowed to coach us.

During the summer, our coach isn’t directly coaching the Union swim team, only the Union students who also choose to swim for SwimTulsa. Dead week is a problem for club sports attached to high schools and the athletes who go to that high school. While I understand how this rule could be necessary for other sports, I think the OSSAA should implement exceptions for some sports and scenarios.
