Letter: Oklahoma does not need an unregulated state militia, just bolster existing forces

Why would anyone think an unregulated, paramilitary trained, state militia packing military-issued weapons of war is a sane idea? aks Lenore Underwood of Stigler

Maj. Gen. Thomas Mancino, commander of the Oklahoma Army and Air National Guard, came before an Oklahoma Senate panel evaluating agency budgets recently with a request for money to stand up an unregulated state militia.

He is asking for initial start-up costs of $2.4 million in tax dollars. He claims that Gov.

Kevin Stitt approached him earlier this year with the idea and wanted him to examine forming a militia independent from the Oklahoma National Guard and Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Mancino wouldn’t specify any existing threat facing Oklahoma today that needed this additional unregulated state militia force, only referencing Stitt’s thoughts about Texas border issues. Excuse me, but why would anyone think an unregulated, paramilitary trained, state militia packing military-issued weapons of war — and hopped up on testosterone — is a sane idea? We don’t need to be. If we really need more police, then fund the existing Oklahoma Highway Patrol, various city and county police forces, or the Oklahoma National Guard for more training and personnel. At least with these agencies, officers would have existing standards to meet, rules to operate by and accountability to abide.
