Letter: Grateful for the work of Maine health care providers

During a recent life-threatening health emergency, I was treated with compassion.

In today’s world, it is often easy to criticize our institutions, especially those in education and health care. But I recently had a life-threatening health emergency and I am so grateful to be living in a state that offers such expertise and care. My thanks go out to the quick, decisive doctors and nurses at Pen Bay ER and to the dedicated LifeFlight team who delivered me to the amazing, brilliant doctors and nurses at Maine Med, who worked around the clock to save my life.

Their devotion to their patients is beyond belief. My healing at Maine Med would not have been possible without the kindness and respect of the nurses and every person who helped in my recovery. I was treated with dignity and compassion no matter the time of day or night.

One evening, as I was thanking these caregivers, my nurse’s reply was, “Just people helping people.” Indeed, they are our great Maine people. Thanks to all of them for helping all of us.
