Letter: Gentner Drummond right candidate for next governor

Gentner Drummond can turn Oklahoma into a state to envy, not one known for being unattractive in so many categories, says Philip Haney of Tulsa.

No recent event has brightened my political spirit as much as the announcement that Attorney General Gentner Drummond has declared his candidacy for governor. Drummond’s enduring point-counterpoint with Gov. Kevin Stitt has served as a vital balance — unfortunately necessary to run our state government by the rule of law, and with some common sense.

Drummond has time and again been required to butt up against executive and administrative actions that don’t serve the interests of Oklahoma and only seem to tag along with somebody else’s reactionary agenda. The clear choice is between allowing another administration taking us deeper into nationalism, or leadership with a vision that moves Oklahoma toward becoming a state that attracts educated people, offers strong public education, offers high paying jobs, and boasts an environment that recognizes human needs and provides for them. We need a governor who can work with the Legislature to move the state forward, help all of us accept this charge, work together for it. Given a chance do it, Drummond can turn Oklahoma into a state to envy, not one known for being unattractive in so many categories. We need to pay close attention to this race, as so much of what Oklahoma needs depends on putting the right person in the Governor’s Office.
