Proposed online safety laws, like Nebraska’s LB504, may do more harm than good. While protecting kids online is crucial, this bill raises serious privacy concerns, expands government overreach and threatens free expression. Requiring platforms to verify users’ ages could expose sensitive data to cyberthreats and stifle online speech.

It also undermines parental authority, placing the government in a role it isn’t suited for. Moreover, such regulations could hinder Nebraska’s tech growth, driving talent elsewhere. Instead, we should empower parents and foster innovation, ensuring online safety without sacrificing privacy, free speech or economic progress.
