Cayuga County Office for Aging held their “March for Meals/Save Lunch” event last week to draw attention to the need to assist older adults wanting to remain in their homes as they age. Seven “Community Champions” helped to deliver meals to our recipients: Auburn Mayor Jimmy Giannettino, Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck, Cayuga County Undersheriff Stuart Peenstra, Auburn City Clerk Chuck Mason, Community Action Programs Cayuga/Seneca Kinship Care Program Manager Melissia Thompson, Office for Aging Advisory Council Chair Beverly Centers, and Office for Aging Advisory Council Vice Chair Betty Maute. They were hosted by Meals on Wheels volunteers, who showed their “Champion” the crucial role they play in their daily deliveries.
Meals on Wheels volunteer Larry Simmons chats with client Betsy VanNorstrand while making the rounds delivering food to seniors in Auburn. These community leaders experienced the impact that the Senior Nutrition Program has on providing a balanced, nutritional, hot meal, along with a social visit and informal wellness check, to our grateful recipients. They were also given greater insight into the planning and coordination that occurs daily to meet the varied needs of our population each day we deliver.
Their involvement also helped to showcase how important public funding is to our mission. The Senior Nutrition Program would like to thank our gracious “Community Champions," our dedicated volunteers, and The Citizen for their valuable coverage for this event. Meals on Wheels volunteer Larry Simmons was visiting homes Wednesday with food in his hand and a smile on his face.
