On Thursday, Rep. Trent Ashby, as a member of the House Public Education Committee, showed us how he really feels about the public schools in his own district by voting yes on the two crucial bills that will affect his “constituents” for years to come. He voted for the Public Education Underfunding Bill (HB2), which will give each student a raise of only $395, when inflation has eaten away more than $1,500 per student since 2019.

The table below shows you how this will not help his ISDs deal with their existing financial crisis. And then to pile on top of that, he also voted yes for the $1 billion Private Education Boondoggle Bill (HB3) which will take money away from his struggling ISDs, also shown in the table above. Interestingly leading up to that vote he received many calls from his constituents, and 95% of them are opposed to his stance on HB3.

The questions facing him now are 1) how will he vote on the House floor next week, and 2) how will his constituents react at the voting booth next year. Stay tuned and we will find out how much he really cares about the public schools in his own district, much less his hometown of Lufkin..
