LETTER: Anti-abortion laws affect women's, children's health

In 2022, a 12-year-old in Mississippi was raped by a stranger. She was too ashamed to tell her mother. Her mother noticed that her daughter was withdrawing, noticed that something was wrong.

A doctor confirmed that her daughter was pregnant. DNA from the baby allowed police to arrest the criminal. But abortion laws in her state, in effect, led to this 12-year-old to bear her rapist’s baby.
