Lesley Griffiths MS writes to Wrexham Council highlighting pothole scheme

Drivers will be all too aware just how much of a nuisance potholes can be. They’re a source of frustration and can cause a great deal of damage to vehicles.

By Lesley Griffiths MS for Wrexham Drivers will be all too aware just how much of a nuisance potholes can be. They’re a source of frustration and can cause a great deal of damage to vehicles. In February, the Welsh Government announced it was to allocate an extra £25m to help fix the problems.

The funding boost will see an extra 100km of major roads be resurfaced, with the roads most in need of repair being targeted and thousands of potholes being fixed in the process. Work is already underway but this welcome investment specifically targets the major road network across Wales – including roads such as the A483 for example – that fall under the responsibility of the Welsh Government. Local roads should be maintained by the respective local authorities and at the time of this announcement, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Ken Skates MS, made it clear there would be additional funding for councils to help them address local issues.

Those plans were revealed as part of the Welsh Government’s Final Budget, with local authorities set to access up to £120m to accelerate some of the much-needed repair work on local roads and pavements. Councils are expected to apply for funding and I have written to the Leader of Wrexham Council to highlight the scheme and to seek assurances Wrexham’s case will be put forward at the appropriate time. The Erlas Victorian Walled Garden is one of Wrexham’s hidden treasures.

Located on Bryn Estyn Lane, the garden itself has been established for over 20 years. It was brought back to life by a group of individuals who had a vision to rebuild the garden, and in the process, help rebuild the lives of adults whose disabilities and learning difficulties had limited their opportunities. The Erlas charity promotes and protects the health of people with additional learning needs by providing meaningful daytime activity, education and work experience in horticulture.

I caught up with the team again recently and remain so proud to be a patron of Erlas. The garden is a place of work, comfort and inspiration for adults of all abilities and the staff and volunteers continue to do an amazing job. Come rain or shine, Erlas is open Monday to Friday from 9am – 3pm.

Plants and seasonal fruits and vegetables are sold daily and visitors of all ages are always welcome. If you’re a constituent in Wrexham and there is an issue I could help you with, please contact me via email: lesley.griffiths@senedd.
