Lenovo expands AI presence in India with new AI server manufacturing and R&D lab

Lenovo’s Puducherry plant will now produce enterprise AI and GPU servers, specifically designed for AI workloads. These servers will meet the growing demand for AI infrastructure, both in India and internationally, with more than 60% of production set for export across the Asia-Pacific region.

PC maker Lenovo, on Tuesday, announced two major developments in India: the start of AI server manufacturing and the launch of a new Research & Development (R&D) lab. These moves align with India’s ‘Made in India’ and ‘AI for All’ goals, showing Lenovo’s growing commitment to the country as a key hub for technology innovation and production. Lenovo, which has been manufacturing in India for nearly 20 years, said that it is now making AI servers at its Puducherry plant.

At the same time, its new R&D lab in Bengaluru will focus on developing advanced server technologies, helping Lenovo stay at the forefront of AI and tech solutions. Lenovo’s Puducherry plant will now produce enterprise AI and GPU servers, specifically designed for AI workloads. These servers will meet the growing demand for AI infrastructure, both in India and internationally, with more than 60% of production set for export across the Asia-Pacific region.



The plant will produce 50,000 AI servers and 2,400 high-end GPU units each year, helping Lenovo strengthen its supply chain for AI solutions. “This is a big step toward achieving Lenovo's and India’s ‘AI for All’ vision,” said Amar Babu, President of Lenovo Asia Pacific. “We are committed to expanding India’s role in global tech innovation and manufacturing.

” Alongside the AI server production, Lenovo has opened a new R&D lab in Bengaluru. This lab will focus on developing and testing new server platforms, including hardware, firmware, and software. It’s part of Lenovo’s global R&D network, with labs in the US, China, and Taiwan.

“Our investment in AI server manufacturing and R&D in India is long-term,” said Shailendra Katyal, Managing Director of Lenovo India. “This new lab shows our dedication to making cutting-edge technologies ‘in India for the world.’” The lab is said to work on mainstream server designs and other tech initiatives, helping Lenovo strengthen its research capabilities globally.

Lenovo has been manufacturing technology in India since 2005, producing over seven million devices last year. With these new AI initiatives, the company is deepening its investment in the country and positioning India as a major player in global technology and AI solutions.
