The last time Lehman College won a baseball game, it had been May 9, 2023. For the 42 games since then, the Lightning failed to come out on top before Tuesday night when they finally snapped the losing streak against another struggling program that had lost 100 straight games, Yeshiva University. In an interview with NBC News’ Tom Llamas aired during Wednesday’s “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt,” Lehman pitcher Justin Chamorro described the struggle the team felt to keep its head up as they continued to suffer loss after loss.

“You gotta be optimistic, because when you’re in a hole like that, it’s hard. It’s hard to find the positives,” Chamorro said. “I kept telling my teammates that, just keep pushing, and it’s going to happen.

” Chomorro was indeed correct, and that day came on Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader with Yeshiva University. But the win didn’t come easy as Lehman found itself down 6-4 and three outs away from another loss when Brandon Deynes hit a two-run double to tie the score in the seventh. Elias Fermin was hit by a pitch in that same inning with the bases loaded to score the go-ahead run.

Chamorro pitched a complete game for the Lightning and in the clip, he discussed the feeling once the win was finally secured. “A sense of relief, a sense of joy!” he said. “When there’s that much adversity going your way, it’s that much sweeter on the other side.

The two baseball programs had drawn a considerable amount of national attention heading into the showdown after more and more people became aware of the historic nature of the game, with both teams looking to break extensive losing streaks. Yeshiva would get revenge — and snap their 100-game losing streak — in the second game of the doubleheader, beating Lehman 9-5 to end their historic drought. “Different folks in sports, cresting a mountain can be winning a championship, for us, winning a game was that for us,” Yeshiva baseball coach Jeremy Renna told NBC News.
