The next set in LEGO’s huge UCS series is 75397: Jabba’s Sail Barge. The set has 3 942 pieces and releases in October. Overseas pricing had already been revealed, but the local R9500 price tag was just uncovered.

After months of rumours LEGO has finally revealed the next set in the Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) line-up of giant sets from Star Wars. It is 75397: Jabba’s Sail Barge – the biggest and most detailed version of the vehicle that LEGO has already tried to recreate in the past with smaller sets . This new version is a real behemoth, containing 3 942 pieces and measuring in at 77 X 25 X 25 centimetres (length X height X width) when built.

Accompanying the Sail Barge is a slew of 11 minifigures to recreate what we see of the vehicle in Return of the Jedi. The titular Jabba the Hutt is, of course, included. We haven’t had a Jabba the Hutt figure in LEGO for many years so it’s good to see the Hutt again, even if he’s locked away in such an expensive set.

Jabba is joined by his cohort of characters (Bib Fortuna, Max Rebo, Kithaba, Vizam, Wooof, a Gamorrean Guard and Salacious Crumb). Some less-criminal minifigures are included in the form of Princess Leia, C-3PO and R2-D2. Leia is printed in her outfit appropriate to the Sail Barge scenes, but LEGO has toned down the amount of visible skin you see on the character by giving her what looks more like a pair of shorts.

R2-D2 is also given a Bar table accessory” which is just a LEGO plate separating its head from its body, which allows you to put cups and glasses on the figure. For all of this customers will pay €499.99, $499.

99 or £429.99 depending on where they live. While the Sail Barge was leaked and then officially revealed a few days ago, we haven’t covered it until today so we can share South African pricing for the set.

Great Yellow Brick, the online storefront for the official physical LEGO stores in South Africa, now has a listing for the Sail Barge which reveals this price. That listing, viewable here , sets the price at R9 499. While still insanely expensive, it’s worth noting that South Africans will be paying a comparable price compared to our overseas counterparts.

South African pricing is usually tied to the EU price, which is €499.99. At the time of writing €499.

99 is equal to ~R9 793. While that’s around R300 shaved off the top, it’s close enough to say that we’re paying about the same locally. With so many shipping issues plaguing the world right now, and the immense size of this set when it’s boxed, we’re very surprised that LEGO has managed to bring the set into the country at a price so close to overseas listings.

Putting aside the what you’re paying for regardless of where you live, the reception to the Sail Barge has been mixed to say the least. For the price, the sentiment from the community is that the piece count should have been increased and / or the number of minifigures should be higher. For example consider set 76405: Hogwarts Express .

Like the Sail barge it has a third party licence (this time Harry Potter), but it has more pieces at 5 129 and more minifigures at 20. All of this for less money, as the price is R9 199. Alternatively there’s 10316: Rivendell .

It is even cheaper still at R8 999, but contains even more pieces with 6 167 and still more minifigures than the Sail Barge at 15. That’s just two examples, but there are several more from LEGO’s catalogue which offer more pieces and more minifigures for less money making the Sail Barge less enticing..
