Officials prepare to flag off the runners at Marina Recreational Park. MIRI (Sept 9): The public is asked to rally behind the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association in their fundraising efforts meant to enhance training opportunities for hearing-impaired athletes. In making the call, state Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin emphasised the importance of giving support to the state’s deaf athletes to enable them to compete at elite levels such as the Deaflympics and the Malaysia Deaf Games (Sopma).

“There is a need for an increased support to ensure that deaf athletes receive the necessary resources to achieve sporting excellence,” said the Senadin assemblyman. The text of his speech was read by Councillor Yap Siew Jin, who represented the minister at the Miri edition of the Silent Deaf Run 4.0, at Marina Recreational Park yesterday.

The event attracted some 650 enthusiasts who took part in the 5km and 3km runs. Furthermore, Lee expressed his gratitude towards the run’s three-member working committee for having successfully organised similar events in Kuching and Sibu. “This event’s main focus is to raise awareness for deaf individuals.

The Sarawak Deaf Sports Association organising chairman Victor Hii Lik Nguong, who is hearing impaired, has been able to successfully host a grand event together with his team. “Also, the support shown by the participants does have a profound impact to the hearing-impaired community, demonstrating how the support integrates into society goes beyond words,” said Lee..
