The Lee Kwou Kuen (LKK) Group of Companies has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to healthcare in the Solomon Islands by announcing the construction of a new tuberculosis (TB) ward at the National Referral Hospital (NRH). According to a statement from local company LKK, the new building, estimated to cost around $18 million, will be a donation to the people of the Solomon Islands, aiming to strengthen the nation's healthcare infrastructure and provide better care for patients. The new project is not the first that was donated by the Lee Kwou Kuen Family.

In 2019, the Lee Kwou Kuen family donated a new wing to the hospital's Medical Ward, adding 18 hospital beds, a conference room, and a storage space for medical equipment. Dr. Jones Ghabu, Head of the Department at NRH, expressed deep gratitude for the donation, stating, “We are so humbled by such a generous gift that made our dream and wishes come true.

No words can express our gratitude in simplicity, but the smiles you can see on our faces speak louder than our words.” In April 2022, LKK also supported the completion of a 30-bed Special Care Nursery at NRH, which had been delayed since 2017 due to challenges. The project was revived through LKK’s partnership, allowing the hospital to accommodate more newborns requiring special care.

At the handover, NRH’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. George Malefoasi, praised LKK's ongoing support, saying, “This special care nursery means more newborn babies needing special care can be accommodated at the hospital. We are working to increase the number of beds to reach its full capacity soon.

” Pediatric and Special Care Nursery HOD, Dr. Titus Nasi thanked the Lee Kwok Kuen and Company for taking the initiative to help complete the project. “They have not only taken over the project but added extra space to the building,” acknowledged, Dr.

Nasi. He made assurance to Lee Kwok Kuen that they will look after the building. “Certainly, everyone will enjoy the new building while caring for the little ones,” said.

Dr. Nasi. Solomon Sheet Steel Construction Manager, Neil Buendia in handing over the building said that Lee Kwok Kuen’s Board and Management are very pleased to once again support NRH as it will benefit many of our new born babies who will require special care including postnatal mothers, thereby contributing to health and lives of our future generation.

Special Care Nursery is purposely to care for premature babies, those who are born with low birth weight or need care for neonatal health issues. A representative of LKK emphasized the company's continued commitment to improving healthcare in the country: “We are honored to contribute to the well-being of our fellow citizens by improving healthcare infrastructure. This new project is our way of giving back to the community and helping the country address critical health challenges such as TB.

We hope this new ward will ease the burden on the hospital and provide better care for those in need.” The new TB ward is another significant addition to the National Referral Hospital's capacity, marking a continued legacy of support from LKK that has profoundly impacted the healthcare system in the Solomon Islands. The Ministry of Health, the NRH, and the people of Solomon Islands appreciates LKK’s ongoing contributions towards healthcare, recognizing that these donations will have a lasting positive impact on the nation's health services.
